Abstract
Communication problems can be studied and solved through the
application of coding techniques and Information Theory. This thesis
is divided into two parts. Part A presents some of the problems of
data transmission and terminology of Information Theory. Following
this, a survey of the recent developments in Communication Theory,
such as the multiple-user communication and the Viterbi Algorithm is
included. In Part B the method of Shannon is used to estimate the
various entropy values of printed Bahasa Malaysia. This makes use of
the fact that natural languages can be considered as ergodic processes
and any sequence of symbols, such as letters, words and sentences is
predictable to some extent. Letter, digram and word statistics of
Bahasa Malaysia were obtained and tabulated. Following this, a series
of prediction experiments were carried out with the help of human
subjects. From these two sets of data, the upper and lower entropy
bounds and redundancy of Bahasa Malaysia were obtained. A comparison
between the entropies of printed English and Bahasa Malaysia is also
included.
