Abstract
In this new century, every manufacturing sector or service-providing sector are very
focused and concerned about the quality of the product/service that they provide to their
customers. If an organization do not have the quality concept, then it is very hard for them
to survive in this challenging world.
As we know, it is very difficult to eliminate the variation 100% and then obtain
100% good product. However, we can increase the percentage of good product if early
action is taken. In every process, there is a certain amount of defective parts and it is up to
us to detect the defects and then prevent them from recurring.
Most of the plastic injection molding manufacturers only detects the defective part
after the part was injected out from the machine. Following this, the manufacturers has to
engage extra manpower to do the rework and sorting out the related lots or even worse,
scrap the whole lot if it cannot be reworked anymore. Concepts such as 'Do It Right At
The First Time' and 'Prevention Is Better Than Detection' never appear in their minds.
Therefore, this dissertation aims to introduce the concept and implementation of
process control techniques in plastic injection molding process. These techniques include
things that should be done during trial run stage, most suitable analyzing tools to use,
control methods applicable at the mass production stage and factors to be considered when
choosing related control tools.
A project had been conducted as a case study to illustrate the implementation of
Statistical Process Control tools to control the plastic injection molding process. Design of Experiments, Process Capability Indices, Measurement System Analysis and Control Plan
will be used to set up a control system for plastic injection molding process.
