Abstract
Since the introduction of Green Tyre concept, the use of silica as reinforcing fillers has spread and grown worldwide. The aim of this project is to determine the suitability of silica (Si) to replace carbon black (CB) in cushion gum for tire re-treading application. In this work, effect of dual fillers (silica and carbon black), amount of coupling agent and different types of accelerators on curing characteristics, Mooney viscosity, hardness and tensile properties were studied. The variation of CB/Si indicated that rubber masterbatch 30CB/10Si meet all the specification with mooney viscosity of 24.89 MU. Increasing the amount of silane coupling agent in the silica filled masterbatch, mooney viscosity, hardness and the tensile strength increased. Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) in the compound gave the highest mooney visocity followed by Tetramethyl thiuram monosulfide (TMTM) and N-cyclohexylbenzothiazyl sulfenamide (CBS). Scorch time and cure time increased when using the CBS. The presence of both TMTD and CBS in compound increased the tensile strength, lowered modulus and increased elongation at break.
