Abstract
This study was conducted to examine issues and problems related to school
dropouts in order to identify the implications for social work practice. Based on the
qualitative research method, a government secondary school (in Kuching, Sarawak)
which has the highest record of school dropouts from Form 1 and Form 2 were
selected together with their parents and teachers through purposive sampling. They
were identified because they were involved directly in school dropout issues. The
findings of the research revealed an array of situations influenced the school dropped
out such as; (a) home's environments include parents' values and attitudes, poverty,
student's and family's interests on schoolling; (b) ~chool's environments which
comprised school's values and attitudes, gangsterism, and discipline; (c) the presence
of social work and counselling services; (d) curriculum, and (e) peer influences. These
situations had influenced why they stopped and been stopped from schoolling. The
study found out most of them did not have any plan to continue scholling and could not
work due to their young age. The findings highlighted the need for the introduction of
social work services throughout schools in Malaysia. School social workers can play an
important role in promoting better networking and collaboration between the community
and the school in order to prevent the occurrence of school dropouts at an early stage,
as well as to address the problems relateq to dropouts within the school and in the
community.
