dc.description.abstractThe Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Dam project is designed to produce 372 MW hydropower developed on the Bertam River, Pahang. The project commenced on 1 March 2011 and will be completed by the year of 2016. In this project, three underground caverns build are Powerhouse Cavern, Surge Chamber Cavern and Transformer Cavern that are connected through adits and draft tubes. There are three types of rock mass condition existed around caverns which are fresh rock, slightly weathered and moderately weathered rock condition. In this study, based on the rock condition, the rock mass properties is determined and the values obtained is used to create a 2 Dimensional finite element modelling. The displacement predicted through this analysis is analysed and discussed to determine the effect of rock condition to the displacement of rock. Then, the stability of caverns is determined. The fresh rock condition (G1) is the most stable having a little displacement. The maximum displacement is only 5.5 mm for Powerhouse Cavern, 5.6 mm for Surge Chamber Cavern and 3.5 mm for Transformer Cavern. The maximum displacement happened at the G3 rock condition with 6.6 mm for Powerhouse Cavern, 6.8 mm for Surge Chamber cavern and 4.3 mm for Transformer cavern. The minimum displacement for G3 rock condition is 1.4 mm for Powerhouse cavern, 1.1 mm for Surge Chamber Cavern and 1.7 mm for Transformer Cavern. The degree of weathering affects the rock mass strength and thus affects the cavern stability. The higher the degree of weathering, the higher the displacement occurs at the cavern boundaries.en_US
