Abstract
Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) is one of the softwares that have been used in
teaching and learning geometry in secondary schools. However, its usage at the
primary schools has not been implemented yet, in fact it is not even found in the
Mathematics Primary Curriculum Specification. Realizing the effectiveness of this
software, a study has been done to find out whether the primary school students can
and have the potential to use it.
32 year 5 students o'f Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Siput (U) Perak was
chosen willingly for thk study. These students were asked to carry out some activities
with GSP in pairs following the guide in the module prepared. All of the students
were given a pre and post test to test their abilities and the data obtained was
analyzed using Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The statistical
tests used were the paired t-test and the Kolmogrov Z. At the end of the lesson, the
students were required to fill in a questionnaire form prepared. The data from the
survey form was analyzed by descriptive statistics which uses frequencies and
percentages.
Results from the questionnaires showed that most of the students have
positive views towards the use of GSP. It is hoped that the result from this study can
help the Ministry of Education organize and extend courses in learning GSP to the
primary school teachers. Besides that, it will hopefully make the primary school
educators to realize the need to learn GSP and use it entirely in teaching and learning
mathematics.
