Mechanical properties of zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramic produced from Al2O3 /8YSZ system has been investigated. The 8YSZ compositions were varied from 5 wt.% to 25 wt.%. Each Al2O3 and 8YSZ composition was mixed and sintered at temperature at 16000C for 1 hour in hot isostatic pressed sintering (HIP) method. The ZTA samples were characterized through the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The sample peaks were identified as α-alumina (α-Al2O3) with ICSD file number 98-003-4393 and zirconium yttrium oxide (Zr0.935Y0.065 O1.968) ICSD file number 98-003-4393. The microstructure observation through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 5 K magnification shows that with the increasing of 8YSZ content, the percentage of porosity appears to be diminished (~30%). Study on the effect of the microstructure of ZTA ceramics sample on the physical properties such Vickers hardness, bulk density and porosity has been carried out. The Vickers hardness results show that 15 wt.% of 8YSZ produced the optimum hardness which is the highest value 1706.74 HV.en_US
