Abstract
This thesis reviews Modular Visualization Environments ( MVEs), a recent architecture for visualization software, and introduces an alternative approach to MVEs, which is built upon recognized benefits of MVEs and overcomes some limitations of MVEs. The alternative mapping technique introduced in this thesis is called the Model Based Mapping Technique. Its main objective is to create graphics primitives fl'om scientific data via a model of the underlying phenomenon. The MVE architecture used for visualizing data affects image accuracy. Data flow from one process to another modifies initial data relationships which are very important to the scientist. Visualizing data alone is inefficient and mapping scientific data can cause excessive memory requirements. A concept which separates modelling from viewing to resolve the above mentioned limitations by avoiding low level implicit assumptions is employed in this mapping technique. Models represented as mathematical functions help to compress data and images can be derived accurately from these functions. A polygonizing algorithm for use in this context is introduced. In this algorithm, models represented as implicit surface functions are used to derive a polygonal approximation for image rendering. The Model Based Mapping Technique is successful in mapping and rendering images for models represented in implicit surface form and 30 numerical data. This technique can be used to visualize multiple isosurfaces and disjoint surfaces of an isosurface
