Abstract
The purpose of this research consist of three objectives which are to produce muscovite that have increases its interlayer space, to obtain inorganic ion exchange with two step process, and to observe the effect of untreated and treated muscovite as a filler on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) matrix. The interlayer space of muscovite with lithium nitrate treatment had been enlarged from 0.99 Å to 1.22 Å while intercalation of first treatment with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) produces increasing spacing value of layer. This two-step process will ease the exchange of ion by increasing its interlayer spacing. Composite with treated and treated muscovite has been used as filler with the same ratio. Mechanical result testing shown treated muscovite have better performance than untreated muscovite in all three filler loading samples. Difference values tensile strength for 1 % filler loading is 2.27 MPa, 3 % is 3.65 MPa and for 5 % is 4.9 MPa.
