This research is done to characterize bamboo sawdust (BSD), investigate the main significant factor and interaction of process factors during hydrolysis process and to identify the optimum condition for Hydrolysis of Bamboo Sawdust by using Design of Experiment (DOE). There were five types of characterization of BSD was conducted such as Moisture and Ash Content Determination, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for morphology observation, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify chemical bonds in a molecule, and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for crystallinity. The characterization of BSD was done before and after hydrolysis process conducted to observe the changes of BSD sample. The morphology study by SEM shows the changes of structure of BSD surface. From the results obtained, the main significant factor for this research was the size of BSD which gave the most effects towards hydrolysis of BSD. Followed by temperature, mass of BSD and concentration of H2SO4. A mathematical model was created from the significance and interaction of the factors that was manipulated during the hydrolysis process of BSD. The optimum condition for the hydrolysis of BSD in dilute sulphuric acid are small size of BSD used, high temperature, larger mass of BSD and low concentration of H2SO4 which will produce reducing sugar with low crystallinity index (CI).en_US
