Abstract
Dye effluents generated from the textile industries were released to the water bodies causes several environmental and ecological problem due to its high toxic compound. In recent years, agricultural waste based activated carbon is used as adsorbent for treating the dyes wastewater. In this study, the pineapple peel based activated carbon (PPAC) was prepared via physical activation which undergo carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification by using microwave irradiation. The optimization of the PPAC preparation conditions of microwave power and activation time for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye was done by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The optimum preparation conditions for PPAC were obtained at 440 W of radiation power and 5 min of activation time which resulted the MB removal of 84.55 %. The optimized PPAC has high BET surface area, mesopore surface area, pore volume and fixed carbon content of 544.07 m2/g, 285.32 m2/g, 0.3035 cm3/g and 67.92 % respectively. The PPAC was mesoporous type with the pore diameter of 2.23 nm. The MB adsorption by PPAC increased with increasing of initial dye concentrations and contact time. The MB adsorption equilibrium onto PPAC was best fitted by Langmuir isotherm model with monolayer adsorption capacity of 84.76 mg/g. Meanwhile, the kinetic studies of MB adsorption onto PPAC was best represented by pseudo-second order kinetic models. The resistance of intraparticle diffusion increased as the particle size increased.
