Abstract
The curing behavior of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with two different curatives, the processibility of Polyetherimide (PEI) in the presence of DGEBA and the effect of PEI on curing characteristics and morphological properties of various concentrations of PEI/DGEBA-curative were studied. 4'-Methylenebis (2,6-diisopropylaniline) (M-DIPA) and Diethyl Methyl Benzenediamine (L15) were used as curing agent. The cure characteristics were analyzed using DSC and the morphology study was done using SEM. MDIPA showed the highest exotherm peak temperature compared to L15, and is considered more suitable to act as reactive plasticizer in PEI. Glass transition temperature (Tg) obtained from DSC studies showed that blends with 40wt% and less PEI partially miscible while blends with 60wt% and 80wt% PEI are miscible. For both PEI/DGEBA-MDIPA and PEI/DGEBA-L15 blends, the presence of PEI slightly delayed cure reaction of epoxy. DSC analysis of both cured blend systems showed two Tgs due to the presence of phase separated regions. SEM observations of the both cured blend systems revealed the formation of PEI dispersed particles in an epoxy matrix for blends with 20wt% and 30wt% PEI, and epoxy-rich particles dispersed in PEI-rich matrix for the blends with 40wt% and 60wt% of PEI. Cure characteristics result indicated that DGEBA-MDIPA is more suitable as reactive plasticizer in PEI.
