Abstract
The quality of a safety shoes outsole application literally hard to be maintain when
the rubber compound is purchased from the supplier. Therefore, this research project
focused on the development of rubber compound that will be used in the production of
outsole for safety shoes with special feature of non-marking. The benchmark for the
quality that will be produced basically based on the specification of ISO 20345:2011. All
the rubber compounds were cured using direct vulcanized technology and hot pressed to
obtain the sample for the testing. The optimum temperature used is 160°C with the time
for outsole to be moulded depending on the cure time. Rubber compound with special
feature which is non-marking and slightly formation of marking is varies from the amount
of filler used such as carbon black and precipitated silica. There are seven rubber
compounds created and modified with different type of rubber compounding ingredients
which is to ensure the physical and mechanical properties follow the require specification.
The variable that be done is by modify the amount of precipitated silica, carbon black,
epoxidized soybean oil, polyethylene glycol, and Ultra-Flex. The physical and
mechanical properties were examined using abrasion, tear strength, tensile strength, antistatic, electrostatic discharge, and hardness. Rubber compound with the highest amount
of epoxidized soybean oil have the highest crosslink density with the least volume loss
resulting to high abrasion resistance. When the crosslink density higher therefore the
higher the hardness value. Then anti-static and electrostatic discharge, when anti-static
agent higher the electric resistance lower.
