Abstract
This study has provided a comprehensive assessment of operating efficiencies and corporate governance of public listed companies in Malaysia. Banking industry has been our focus in this study because the banking sector is the backbone of the economy and the process of data collection through annual reports
and international databases have set the direction towards banking where most of the data were easily available through annual reports from Bank Negara Malaysia and Worldscope database. Our results analysis showed that it is difficult for the companies to maintain its efficiency over years. In terms of the corporate governance aspect, our analysis found that the separation of responsibility of CEO is important in increasing the efficiency, small board size contributes to the efficiency while the number of independent non-executive directors has minimal impact on the efficiency.
