dc.description.abstract	A lot of researchers are advocating more disciplined approaches to expert system development, ifl order for it to be more utilised in the commercial sector. This has given rise to research in methodologies for developing expert systems. Besides methodologies, tools and environments are also needed to speed up the development process. However building tools at random regardless of any goals is not a very judicious approach. Instead, expezt system building tools should be founded on some kind of development methodology. Our work involves a survey on various expert system development methodologies. As a follow up we selected the Conceptual Structures Methodology to be the foundation of an environment for developing expert systems. After modeling some phases of the methodology, we defined an environment which contains tools that can support the final three phases of the methodology.	en_US
