| dc.description.abstract | This case study seeks to understand a secondary school Indian students' interpretations of their 'actions', i.e. the deviant behaviour. In other words the focus of this research is to explore the reasons why Indian students in secondary schools show deviant behaviour. Data for this study was collected through informal interviews with the school administrators, teachers and Indian pupils, observations and survey questionnaires. The study reveals that the problems of the Indian students were often overlooked by school administrative authorities. These inactions have led to dissatisfaction, frustration and disappointment among Indian students. Indian students believe that the teachers have negative assumptions about them and they look down upon the Indians. They do not find the time to hear their problems and find means and ways to solve them. As such those who are not .. up to the expectations of the teachers feel neglected and left out. This ha.S led to academic failure, disappointment and frustrations. They retaliate and go against the school norms. School environment too does not encourage enough meaningful social interactions among peer groups. Racial sentiments, clique systems and exclusion are very common. Provocation by the students ofthe majority race was often overlooked. Coping strategies of the peer groups among the Indian students cause them to deviate. To conclude, school experiences for some Indian students are dissatisfying, unhappy and frustrating. This is the cause of deviant behaviour among the Indian students in the particular secondary schooL So, the school has to play a more caring role to help Indian students feel welcome in the school environment. | en_US |
