Abstract
Statistical control charts are widely applied nowadays in determining whether a process is behaving as intended or out-of-control which is caused by assignable reason. Since neural network is effective in pattern recognition, a performance comparison is done between the statistical control charts and neural networks based control charts in this study. For statistical based control chart, x chart and CUSUM chart will be used for comparison. Meanwhile, the simulation of the neural network is developed by using the C programming language. The performance of neural network based control chart will be evaluated by the percentage of pattern recognized accurately. The criteria to compare performance of both types of control charts is by using the average run length (ARL). The results indicate that the neural network has a better ARL and it is able to detect the underlying pattern faster than the statistical based control charts. Therefore, the neural network approach is appropriate to be applied in the control chart.
