Abstract
The utilization of natural rubber (NR) latex waste as raw materials is a common practice to improve the sustainability of environment and also to reduce the cost. The aim of this project is to utilize NR latex waste as raw material for rubber shoe sole. The NR latex waste used in this project was old NR latex (OL), compounded NR latex (CL) and NR glove (RG). The coagulation of OL and CL is performed under room temperature with 2% of sulphuric acid. While the vulcanized waste includes CL and RG waste is undergo reclamation process under shearing mechanism. The preliminary study on the optimum loading of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) (60 and 7 phr) is carried out which 60 phr loading achieved the properties of the shoe sole. Next, the rubber compounds with different type of raw materials (SMR20 and reclaim rubber) and combination of 50/50SMR 20 /reclaim rubber are prepared with 60 phr of CaCO3 loading. Based on the mechanical and physical properties, 100% OL gave high tensile strength, modulus, hardness, resilience, aging, swelling percentage but inversely for abrasion resistance and compression set. While for combination of SMR20 with reclaim rubber (RG and CL) gave high tensile strength, modulus, hardness, abrasion resistance but inversely for resilience, aging, swelling percentage and compression set. Based on the specification of rubber shoe sole, the 100% OL and 50/50 SMR20/OL is suitable NR latex waste that can be used as raw material for rubber compound for shoe sole application.
