Abstract
Stress shielding is a problem which occurs due to in appropriate design of hip
prosthesis in the femur. That problem will cause bone remodelling and the bone
becomes more porous and weak. Until now, that stress cannot be eliminated
completely, but only be minimized. The primary goal of this research is to reduce.that
stress in to the minimum level. Even though, ideally it should be eliminated totally.
In this research, the multiple criteria optimization method will be used to
optimize the size of hip prosthesis design tq reduce stress shielding. The algorithm inĀ· , :
FOTRAN (comp.u ter programming) was created based on multiple criteria optimization
concept to optimize the implant. The optimization validation also was done to confirm
the methodology adapted.
The output of the optimization (computer program) is an optimal size of implant
design. The stress analysis using FEA was done for both optimum implant and
conventional implant to check the stress value and the location where it is shielded.
Finally, the comparison oft he stress shielding magnitude and theirs ide-effects was
done for both implants.
Based o n the analysis, the optimization was achieved in reducing the stress
shielding through optimal implant design. Almost 40% stress shielding was reduced
using the optimal implant design. It resulted the bett.e. r load transfer condition between
bone and implant interface.
