Abstract
A method for the preparation of polyesthersulfone (PES) hybrid ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with sustainable antifouling property is introduced. The self-assemble of TiO2 nanoparticles around the pores of PES membrane is the strategy for this method and was achieved via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process during the formation of PES UF membrane. Throughout casting PES membrane, the precursor (titanium butoxide (TBT)) of TiO2 nanoparticles and triblock copolymer (Pluronic F127) were added. During NIPS process, self-assembly of TiO2 nanoparticles around the membrane pores and formation of PES polymeric membranes occurred by controlling the hydrolysis and condensation of TBT. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic segment in F127 have different affinity to the TiO2 nanoparticles and PES matrix respectively and plays an important role. The resultant PES hybrid membrane possesses a structure with good performance when the support layer with the larger finger-like pores structure analyzed in SEM images. Water permeability of the resultant hybrid membranes was 3 times higher than mixed matrix membrane (MMM) in physical blending method. The antifouling analysis by using humic acid as model foulants show antifouling property of hybrid membrane can be enhanced.
