Abstract
The reading of an electrical kilowatt hour (KWH) meter, for domestic consumers, is
done manually by employing many people to record the reading from house to house.
This is obviously inefficient. In Malaysia the number of electricity consumers increased
by 4.9% every year. This results in having more manpower to read the meter manually.
The objective of this research is to design a KWH meter reading system using
telemetry. This will reduce the employment of human resources for meter reading. The
meter reading become more accurate and efficient. The whole process of recording the
KWH meter can be done in one control room.
The KWH meter reading system can be divided into two parts. The first part of the
system is a direct measurement until. It consists of a modified conventional KWH meter
to read the data in digital (i.e binary code). This binary code is then converted into
DTMF signal so that it can be send through telephone line. The second part is the
remote meter reading system. It consists of a DTMF demodulator which converts the
DTMF signal into a binary number and displays the number in decimal form using 7
segments displays.
Every units of the telemetry KWH meter reading system has been tested in order to
check whether the system is working or not. From the testing, a consistence and
accurate system has been successfully developed.
