Abstract
The research work on the synthesize and the use of schwertmannite in the removal of arsenic has been carried out at varying pH and different buffer and acid solutions to determine the favourable of arsenic removal by the synthetic schwertmannite that gives the highest percentage of arsenic removal. Recent study shows that schwertmannite structure like tunnel have the capability to act as the adsorbent to trap arsenic. Thus synthetic schwertmannite was created to prove that it can remove arsenic in this work with some modification. Characterization on synthetize schwertmannite was done before and after arsenic removal experimentation. The arsenic removal test was conducted for 24 hour using orbital shaker for homogenous mixing to improve the As removal reaction. The initial concentration of the arsenic was prepared at 5 ppm and the removal of As experiments were conducted at varying pH. The As removal experiment showed the highest arsenic removal was achieved at pH 2, a condition which is highly acidic for the favourable condition for arsenic removal. Additionally, different buffer and acid solutions were also used as pH adjustment in order to compare which buffer or which acid contributes a better result for arsenic removal. The buffer and acid used were sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid. From this study, it was found out that using sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid as pH adjustment would provide the maximum arsenic removal efficiency.
