Abstract
The resources for mineral industry is expanding fast with the increases in demand. Thus, the depleting in land-based minerals has led the exploration of minerals resources from the deep sea. The deep seabed is expected to have a high concentration of precious metal in comparison to land-based minerals. Therefore, it is necessary for Malaysia to commence on deep seabed mining exploration for the economic and technology benefits. The purpose of this research is to characterize the ocean sample from One Phantom Bank either it is suitable to be used for glassmaking industry. There are five methods of characterization that were implemented in this project such as Particle Size Distribution, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Microscopic Study, Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy- dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). From the characterization results, all of the sample is not suitable to be used for glassmaking industry due to high percentage of metallic minerals and clay that causing the silica grade to be low. This reasearch also aim to find the valuable minerals that might present and to processed the minerals present. For processing, there were two methods that apply which is mozley table and magnetic separator both of these method were used to separate the sample based on their specific gravity and magnetic properties.
