Abstract
The L-system algorithm can be very useful in modelling realistic plants for virtual
environment modelling and also in graphics applications besides as a tool for biological plant
simulation. However, there is a lack of L-system modelling applications which caters for
people who do not have prior knowledge in L-system nor programming skills. This research
describes how we design and develop a visual language framework for L-system plant
modelling to cater to this group of people as well as experts in L-system modelling. The
purpose of this research is to design a visual language framework for L-system and to study
the usefulness and efficiency of visual language in L-system plant modelling. We study the
L-system concepts and develop a visual language framework for these concepts. The visual
language framework covers the L-system attributes and grammar in the form of icon-based
visual language. At the end of this research, we found that our visual language framework is
effective in helping people to understand the L-system concepts and also to model realistic
plants based on the L-system concepts.
