Abstract
The effect of different type of binary accelerators on curing characteristic and mechanical properties of natural rubber/cation exchange attapulgite has been studied. The comparison has been made between the cation exchange attapulgite and untreated attapulgite rubber composites. Optimum ratio of MBTS/TMTD has been investigated on curing and mechanical properties of natural rubber/cation exchange attapulgite. Attapulgite was surface modified by cation exchange method to increase the compatibility with rubber. Natural rubber/cation exchange attapulgite was prepared by using conventional method and latex compounding method. There are four types of binary accelerator been studies which are TMTD/ZDEC, TBBS/TMTD, MBTS/ZDEC and CBS/TMTD. It was found that MBTS/ZDEC has highest mechanical properties and lowest cure rate index among this four type binary accelerator for natural rubber/ cation exchange attapulgite and natural rubber/untreated attapulgite. This is due to MBT and TMTD has formed from the reaction of MBTS with ZDEC which cause the optimum synergetic effect. However, four type of binary accelerator shows ineffective to the scorch time for natural rubber/ cation exchange attapulgite due to the present of alkyl ammonium cations which act as activator in sulfur vulcanization process. Hence, it tends to shorter the scorch time. In addition, there are three ratio of MBTS/ZDEC was investigated which are 1.25:0.25, 1.0:0.5 and 0.75/0.75. MBTS/ZDEC with ratio 1.0:0.5 has the highest mechanical properties and moderate cure rate index. This is due to its give higher synergetic effect in vulcanization process compare to others.
