dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research is to characterize and identify the heavy minerals founds from Northern Peninsular Malaysia. There were two different places of sample available in this research which is the sample from Tronoh and Simpang Pulai. Several test were implemented in this research such as Loss on Ignition (LOI), Particle Size Distribution (PSD) analysis, Phase Identification analysis or X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, elemental composition or X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (XRF), Optical Microscopy using SEM / EDX and leaching tests. From this reasearch,, ilmenite (FeTiO₃), rutile (TiO₂), hematite (Fe₂O₃), monazite [(Ce, La, Nd, Y, Th) (PO₄)], zircon (ZrSiO₄), magnetite (Fe₃O₄) dan xenotime (YPO₄) were found in amang of the two sample. The size range of the sample were from 53µm to 425µm. Hematite was found to be the most abundant mineral in Tronoh sample while hematite and ilmenite were the higher minerals present in the Simpang Pulai sample. Referred to the images of SEM, there were some minerals that interlock with other parent minerals especially in coarse size particle of amang. Based on LOI test, both samples can be considered to have very low value of LOI. In acid leaching test, the smaller size particle shown significant image on surface properties compared with the coarse size particle. The maximu extraction reached about 1.73% in 60 minutes of leaching time.en_US
