Abstract
Database models and systems can be made intelligent by adding knowledge and inferencing capability. The tools for knowledge representation and inferencing are provided within the context of expert systems. The inference and object-based knowledge representation concepts are related to the database concepts and hence a relational database can be closely integrated with a knowledge base. Objects and inheritance can be used as higher level structures in dealing with relational databases. . Hierarchical representation can show clearly the objects relationship and also the inheritance. II Computer Science Information System II (CSIS) has been designed using a structured object model (SOM) approach to represent knowledge and data modeling graphically. This system is an object-oriented expert database system .for storing information on student, staff and research of Computer Science Section, USM. A flexible query system was designed so that users do not have to know any database language command to perform the query. In addition to that, the system also integrated an expert system for course registration counselling, especially for those who have problems in courses registration. Information or facts needed by the knowledge base for this consultation is stored in the database.
