With the convergence of IP based multimedia and communications, multipoint multimedia conferencing is becoming an important form of communication. There are two major problems that have plagued multimedia conferencing. The first is a form of control needed over the conference to maintain order and data integrity. The second is to optimise the bandwidth requirement as network bandwidth generally increase proportionally to the number of participants within the conference. Both the above problems place a serious limitation on the number of conference participants. The control criteria proposed within this the~is was designed to overcome both the above problems. Based on creating a virtual meeting room, the control criteria was formulated using these two fundamental principles: + The need for a control mechanism to coordinate the conference. + Only one site may broadcast or make changes (collaborative document conferencing) at any one time. The control criteria proposed in this thesis provides a method that will optimise multimedia conferencing bandwidth. The implementation of this control criteria is assisted by the creation of a distributed multimedia conferencing environment, which uses the distributed network entities architecture. This architecture will enable higher performance for multimedia conferencing systems as compared with the existing architectures. The distributed multimedia conferencing environment is composed of four entities. They are as follows: The server entity, the client entity, the MLIC entity and the compression entity. This thesis shows that when implementing the distributed multimedia conferencing architecture together with the control criteria, a unique high performance low bandwidth multimedia conferencing environment can be created. Such an environment resolves the problem of control within a conference as well as optimises the bandwidth requirement for such conferences.en_US
