Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) is a process of material joining that recently been widely used in industry such as aerospace and automotive industry. There has many research done on discussing about the effect of welding parameter and coated material toward the properties and behavior of spot welded joint. This research is focusing on the coating effect on the RSW plus with the constant parameter that being applied toward the sample which are consist of similar and dissimilar joint combinations. The coating material involve is galvanized iron and nickel coated where nickel is being studied in term of the plating time parameter so that it will be deposited via electroplating on the mild steel. While for RSW parameter being applied are constant which consist of weld current with 7 kA, weld time with 50 ms and pressure with 37 N. Material characterizations that involve in this project were tensile shear strength, hardness and welding morphology using optical microscope, tensile test machine, Vickers micro hardness, stereo zoom microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result of the experimental studies shows that similar coated combination joint of galvanized iron (GI) have the bigger value of weld nugget lead to higher value of tensile shear strength and lower value of hardness. This may happen because of the GI properties where its consists of lower electrical resistivity and higher thermal conductivity compare other coated and uncoated material.en_US
