dc.description.abstract | The effect of epoxy-polyamine-methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) /methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) systems on the physical, mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy resin was studied. The amount of epoxy and polyamine was fixed at 100 phr and 60 phr respectively and the amount of MEK and MIBK was fixed at 15% to the total weight of epoxy and polyamine. Hardness test, tensile test, flexural test and differential scanning calorimetry test will be carried out for the epoxy-polyamine systems. From this study, it can be concluded that epoxy-polyamine-MEK/MIBK systems have reduction of the physical, mechanical and thermal properties because the flexibility increased. The effect of phase separation of epoxy-polyamine-MEK system was studied by using different heating rates which are 1ºC/min, 2ºC/min, 3ºC/min and 4ºC/min. Besides, one room temperature cured epoxy sample also prepared. It was found that when the heating rate increased, the hardness, tensile strength and flexural strength was also increased due to the less phase separation at higher heating rate. However, elongation at break, tensile modulus and flexural modulus did not show obvious difference because the variation of heating rates is small. For the thermal properties, it was found that glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased when heating rate increased. SEM micrograph shows that epoxy system with higher tensile strength has smoother surface and furrow. For the storage time effect, it was found that the tensile properties for week 4 results of the epoxy systems (stored in room temperature for three weeks) were higher compared to the week 1 results of the epoxy system. | en_US |
