Abstract
In this research, effect of discontinuities structural properties on size of fragments produced by blasting have been studied. Although, numerous studies have been conducted on the other effect of blasting so far, but none of them have paid attention to the effect of discontinuities structural properties on size of fragments produced by blasting. In this case, LafargeHolcim Kanthan Plant quarry has been chosen as the study area where the quarry has formation of limestone rock. Geological mapping was done at the bench blasting site before blasting activity to obtain the discontinuities structural properties at blast site. Then, the data from geological mapping is analyse to identify the dominant discontinuities of persistence, aperture, weathering, infilling and spacing. After the blast, the muckpile photo are taken and were analysed by using Wipfrag image analysis software. Percentages of passing fragment size distribution of rock were obtained from Wipfrag analysis. The strength of rock mass is obtained throughout testing of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Brazilian Tensile Strength (BTS) and Point Load tests. Next, all result from the Wipfrag is analysed and compared with their discontinuities structural properties to find the relationship between size of fragments and geological discontinuities structural properties. It is found that different discontinuities structural properties give affect towards size of fragments rock.
