Abstract
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer was blended with recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) of bottle grade in different composition, up to 100 wt%. The tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength were lower than pure ABS as wt% of recycle PET increase. ABS grafted maleic anhydride (ABS-g-MA) was used as a compatibilizer. The compatibilized blends of recycle poly (ethylene terephtalate)/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) were prepared by extrusion method. By adding ABS-g-MA, the tensile strength, elongation at break and modulus of the blend decrease. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows the distribution of the polymer does not uniform and appearance of void or large aggregate in the blend can be observed. ABS-g-MA can toughen the rPET/ABS blend well. By adding 10wt% of ABS-g-MA, the tensile strength of the compatibilized blends improves from 27.50 MPa to 34.68 MPa and elongation at break slightly increased from 2.46 wt% to 3.12 wt%. The impact strength of compatibilized blends increase as ABS-g-MA content increase.
