Abstract
The use of using nanocomposites filler as a partial replacement for carbon black has become popular recently. In this work, attapulgite was used as reinforcement filler in nanocomposites because the resources are cheap, processable and able to reinforced the nanocomposite. This project was divided into two series which is the first series was focussing on to get the best rubber blend for better properties in blending with attapulgite and carbon black, which a series of rubber composites were studied first to compare the best rubber blend in dispersion of carbon black filler via mastication of CB/NR/SBR, CB/NR/ENR/SBR and other ingredients. It was found that incorporation of ENR-50 as compatibilizer improved the dispersion of filler and influenced the mechanical properties of rubber composites. The second series in this study was incorporation of attapulgite and carbon black to reinforce the best rubber blend in first series study which involved natural rubber/styrene butadiene rubber/epoxidized natural rubber (NR/SBR/ENR). Dodecylamine and hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) was adopted as surface treatment for ATP by cation exchange and melt blending modification techniques in order to increase the dispersion of filler in rubber composites. The morphology, curing characteristics and mechanical properties blends were discussed in detail. The results showed that ATP treated filled rubber composite exhibit better the mechanical and curing characteristics compared to the untreated attapulgite.
