Abstract
Subdivision is an efficient tool in computer aided curve and surface design.

The aim of this disertation is to study how subdivision can be used to generate
curves and surfaces. Various subdivision algorithms for generating curves and
surfaces are being studied. De Casteljau algorithm and subdivision algorithm for
B-spline, which are approximation algorithms, are studied for generating respectively
Bezier and B-spline curves and surfaces . Four points interpolatory subdivision
scheme which is formulated by Dyn, Gregory & Levin is studied as an interpolation
algorithm which can control the shape of the curves and surfaces generated by a
tension parameter. A more general algorithm, Doo & Sabin algorithm, is also being
discussed to generate a surface from an arbitrary polihedral network.
The theory of the convergence of the sequence of control polygons generated
by subdivision to a smooth curve is also being studied. A number of examples are
shown graphically to illustrate each algorithm
