Abstract
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an environmental issue that happens worldwide including Malaysia. AMD can be characterized as an acidic solution where it contains a high concentration of sulphate and suspended solid which is known as heavy metals. The objective of this research was to characterize the treatment media used in the research work which is peat soil and limestone, to identify the significant variables on the iron removal and increasing the pH and to correlate the effectiveness of treatment media in terms of iron removal and increasing the pH. The method that was applied in the work was a vertical flow bed system (VFBS) that was designed by Design of Experiments (DOE). The XRF result shows the CaO content for limestone is 98.55% and CHNS results of organic content for peat soil was 10.693%. The research was separated into two parts which are the characterization of treatment media and small scale passive AMD treatment system which was determined by the Design of Experiment (DOE). In terms of iron removal, the results show that the concentration of iron in AMD was reduced above 90% at all conditions that were applied in this works and pH was increased from 3 to 7. The statistical analysis based on DOE shows that there no interactions between variables for increasing the pH but for iron removal the interaction existed. For the main effect plot for pH shows that the depth of treatment media has the highest effects whereas for the iron removal, the best effect was the initial concentration of AMD at the inlet.
