Abstract
This thesis analyses the lexical meaning, function and dynamic
usage of verbals in Malay. Verbals in this context cover adjectives
and real verbs. Verbals are choosen for this study because verbals
(whether it has undergone affixation or not) is a major gramatical category and is widely used. In fact, verbuls ure the core elements
in the Malay sentence constructions.The modeI used in the study
is the componential analyses of Katz and F'odor (1963) and Law
paraphrase method of Znhnrin Yusoff (1989).
This thesis is based on data which are taken from six Malay
novels. This thesis discusses the meaning of real verbals, verbals
with the prefix meN+ (Root Word)+ 0), prefix meN-(+ Root Word
+ -kan) and prefix meN- (+ Root Word + -i). In the analyses and
description of the meaning of each verbal, this study provides the
semantic elements of the verbals using the componential and the
paraphrasal analyses.
