Abstract
Maintenance is the heart of a company’s production. Maintenance will give effect to the performance of equipment used in the company. Without a good maintenance applied, the equipment will be affected. Thus the production will not run smoothly. Opportunistic Maintenance (OM) is one of the advance maintenance techniques that can be apply within a company. At the very same time, the culture applied in an organization will give either positive or negative impact to its whole operation. Toyota is the example of company that has succeed due to the company’s culture. Toyota was the founder of the Lean Manufacturing Culture (LMC). Maintenance plays an important role in this race and can give impact on operation to the company. Lean has been related with maintenance for such a long time such as one of the support parts for LMC is Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Therefore, in this research, OM will be study with LMC to show their relationship. Based on conceptual analysis, author will analyze publications from journals and articles, then find all information such as genealogy, definition, principles, concepts, and implementation in company. The main method use is Nasi’s four elements. It is the type of conceptual analysis which consists of Element 1 (collect data), Element 2 (External analysis), Element 3 (internal analysis) and Element 4 (forming conclusion). At the end of this research, the results of study of OM in LMC shows that OM started in 1950s while LMC in 1850, but both intercept when the foundation of TPM was started in 1950s with Breakdown Maintenance (BM). OM basically is about the optimization downtime of equipment while the concept of LMC is to reduce waste. The objective of OM is to maintain system functionality to its maximum with optimum tradeoffs between the down times and cost without any failures but LMC is focused to achieve reliable process.. Although both using different tools but both using OEE. OM mostly can be implemented in big plant industries but LMC can be implemented in every sector. Both can increase performance, increase profit, increase reliability and improves production rate.
