Effect of printing temperature and printing speed on mechanical tensile properties of fused deposition modeling fabricated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

dc.description.abstractEffect of printing temperatures (220oC, 230oC, 240oC and 250oC) and printing speeds (30 mm/s, 60 mm/s, 90 mm/s and 120 mm/s) on mechanical tensile properties of fused deposition modeling (FDM) fabricated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) were studied. FDM fabricated ABS specimen was modelled according to ASTM D638 Type I model for tensile test and also finite element analysis (FEA). In addition, tabletop scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of fractured surface of specimens. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was also used to analyse the thermal stability of ABS. Atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to study the surface quality of FDM fabricated ABS. Stress strain curve, tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break were obtained using Instron universal tensile machine (UTM). FDM fabricated ABS increased ductile behaviour as printing temperature increased from 220oC to 250oC. The best processing parameters for tensile strength of FDM fabricated ABS were at printing temperature of 240oC and printing speed of 30 mm/s, and for tensile modulus at printing temperature of 220oC and printing speed of 30 mm/s. However, increased of printing speed gave shorter printing time, but increased in voids formation and surface roughness of FDM fabricated ABS. ANSYS simulation had shown a good agreement on the tensile performances where stress concentration were observed at the gauge region near the moving grip end.en_US
