- PublicationRemoval of ciprofloxacin antibiotic using pumice-bentonite / carbon nanotube composite adsorbent(2024-07-01)Afzal, Husain KhanThis study investigates the adsorption of Ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) from water using Pumice composites with Bentonite/Carbon-nanotube. A novel pumice composite adsorbent was developed using the hydrothermal technique, and adsorption performance was evaluated through batch study. The characterization results of P BNT’s (Pumice-bentonite) and P-CNT’s (Pumice-carbon nanotube) indicated enhanced surface area and high CIP adsorption and reusability compared to raw Pumice. The maximum CIP adsorption onto P-BNT3 and P-CNT3 was 42 and 36.9 mg/g, respectively which is around 5 folds than pristine Pumice. The functionalization of BNT/CNT enhanced surface functional groups, crystallite size and surface heterogeneity of P-BNT/CNT. The kinetics for P-BNT3 composites were well-fitted to the mixed first-second order (MFSO) model (R2 = 0.983), whereas P-CNT3 composite was well-fitted to the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model (R 2=0.989) indicating physisorption. The isotherms results of both composites are better described by Langmuir and Dubinin–Radushkevich, implying the heterogeneous adsorbent surface facilitates both mono/multi-layer CIP adsorption. P-BNT/CNT composites showed satisfactory CIP adsorption in competitive anions and complex water environments. The regeneration of P-BNT3/P-CNT3 composites showed excellent recyclability performance after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Based on the outcomes of this research study, these composites have great potential for the efficient removal of CIP from wastewater systems.
