- PublicationThe strength assessment of selected granite for dimension stone application(2024-08-01)Nur Ain Shafiqah Binti ShahrizanThe evaluation of granite for dimension stone applications, as well as other uses within the construction industry is important in that the physical and engineering properties will provide valuable information with respect to its strength behaviour. In the present study, an attempt was made to examine the mineral composition and strength properties of three granite samples FYS, CH and JRG for their potential use as dimension stones. A Middlemost (1985) ternary diagram was employed to represent the mineral composition of granite samples as a function of three major rock-forming oxides; SiO2, Na2O+K2O and MgO. The location of the samples on this diagram showed that they are granitic rocks but have different mineral assemblages. Studying physical and engineering properties, this leads to strength analysis of the granite samples including compressive strength, tensile and resistance against weathering. Next, the strength analysis results were combined with ternary diagram information to create a more complete picture of granite sample suitability for dimension stone. The use of the ternary diagram and strength analysis together can provide evidence for granite suitability as a dimension stone as demonstrated by this study. Based on the diagram, mineral composition was found to have a very strong relationship with properties as they determine physical and engineering attributes of granite which generally suggest in terms of quality and durability. The combined approach can provide a useful tool for the selection and application of granite as a dimension stone material in building construction.
