Abstract
The hospitalized children were susceptible to secondary malnutrition due to different mechanisms involving in the underlying diseases. It was necessary and essential to detect the nutritional risks of hospitalized children early by using nutrition screening tool and consequently providing detailed nutritional assessment and intervention for those at moderate or high risk of malnutrition. The prevalence of malnutrition risk using specific screening tool was being less explored compared to the actual nutritional status of the hospitalized children in our country. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition risk among hospitalized children and their associated factors by using Screening Tool for Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics (STAMP) in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Sociodemographic characteristics, diet history, anthropometric measurements including weight as well as height and STAMP scores were obtained for the paediatric patients. The prevalence of malnutrition risk stratified by STAMP tool was determined. The relationship among sociodemographic characteristics, adequacy of calories intake and STAMP score and z-score of weight-for-age (WFA), height-for-age (HFA) and body mass index-for-age (BMI/A) were assessed. One hundred and sixteen children including 71 boys and 45 girls were included. The percentages of moderate risk and high risk of malnutrition using STAMP stool were 32.8% and 55.2% respectively. Children with different sociodemographic characteristics had similar risk of malnutrition. The risk of undernutrition was associated with adequacy of calories intake (p=0.03), WFA z-score (p<0.001) and HFA z-score (p=0.026). Based on this finding, the high prevalence of undernutrition risk among hospitalized children was expected to raise the concern and awareness among healthcare professional in clinical settings.
