Digital modulation is a technique widely applied in communication applications nowadays. One of the digital modulation schemes being used in today’s communication technology is 16 QAM. Applications of the 16-QAM modulator are used in Bluetooth, satellite communication and OFDM technologies. Most of the real works that use the 16-QAM modulations are based on a specific integrated circuit. This project shows the development of 16-QAM generated signals schemes for baseband digital data transmission using ModelSim-Altera software. The 16-QAM modulator was divided into 3 main parts which are the DDS sine wave generator, serial-to-parallel converter, and phase shifter. The design of the 16-QAM modulator signal used the Q and I approach. The DDS concept was used to generate sinusoidal signal for local oscillator of the 16 QAM modulator. The design was first simulated with MATLAB/Simulink software to get the constellation diagram of 16 symbols prior to the development of VHDL coding. Unlike other research work, the development of VHDL coding in this project was not using Altera DSP Builder Tools. The functional simulation of the 16-QAM signal modulation was done by using the ModelSim-Altera software. As mentioned before, the modulator was divided into 3 main parts, and each submodule was simulated separately before they were combined to create one single VHDL code for the 16-QAM modulator. The results for each simulation (MATLAB and ModelSim) are shown in this thesis and are explained the details of the results achieved.
