In this paper, I describe a simple second-order discrete-time model for the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) with Random Early Detection (RED) algorithm. The models are separated to three different parts. The first part is the model of TCP behavior during Slow Start phase, Congestion Avoidance phase, Fast Retransmission and Fast Recovery. The second part of this model is RED algorithm only and the others are the composition of the two models to produce TCP/RED model. The TCP/RED mechanism is viewed as a feedback control system where TCP adjusts its sending rate depending on packet loss.
