This project investigates the parameters and methods that can use to finding optimisation of multi-stage reluctance accelerator. The parameters involving the initial position of the projectile, the voltage supplied to the reluctance accelerator, the number of stages of the reluctance accelerator and the shape of a projectile for propelling. The optimisation is based on the speed of the projectile and the efficiency of the reluctance accelerator. The experiment conducts in simulation using FEMM software and hardware. The simulation analyses the magnetic field and flux density of the electromagnetic field. The maximum force obtains at the initial position of the projectile, 10mm. The force value pulling standard projectile, front-flat projectile, front-point projectile are 471.989N,468.568,466.812N respectively. A hardware experiment was conducted using a speed sensor to collect the data speed of the projectile. The simulation result was then used to compare with the hardware result. The highest speed obtain was 48.48m/s when supplied with 250V using a ten-stage reluctance accelerator and highest efficiency is 4.19% when supplied with 200V using a six-stage reluctance accelerator both at 7.5mm initial position of the projectile. As for speed based on projectile shape, the highest speed is 11.26m/s for a flat projectile at 7.5mm position when supplied with 250V. The shape of the projectile was only tested using a single-stage reluctance accelerator. From analysis, the maximum value of speed of the projectile increases when more stage of reluctance accelerator is used but decreases efficiency—only ferromagnetic projectile, which is pure iron.
