dc.description.abstract | Exogenous insulin administration is a critical technique used to control blood glucose levels in diabetic patients and hospitalized inpatients. Closed-loop automated insulin delivery (AID) systems represent an advanced solution for achieving optimal glycemic control. The systems continuously monitor blood glucose levels and regulate insulin delivery, offering a reliable blood glucose management while reducing the workload for patients and healthcare providers. In this project, a control algorithm for AID system with glycemic control feedback was constructed. The glucose-insulin ICING model acts as the patient plant, simulating the glucose-insulin dynamic response. This response is controlled by PID controller. Simulation results demonstrated the control algorithm could maintain blood glucose concentration (BGC) levels to be within the range of 4 mmol/L to 7 mmol/L. The algorithm performed best when adjusted to achieve a target BGC of 6 mmol/L, starting from the initial blood glucose level of 5.25 mmol/L. The developed system was successfully integrated into real-world scenario through a constructed insulin infusion mechanism. The developed AID system effectively managed blood glucose levels of patients with minimal human intervention, significantly reducing the risks of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia events. | |
