Abstract
With the increasing impact of climate change and rising sea levels, the use of hard engineering solutions, such as coastal infrastructure primarily made of concrete, has expanded. While effective for coastal defence, this extensive reliance on concrete contributes to high carbon emissions and the destruction of natural habitats, leading to biodiversity loss and reduced ecological function. Simultaneously, the uncontrolled disposal of industrial waste has exacerbated land and water pollution, creating additional challenges in urban environments. To address these interconnected issues, the objectives of this research were to develop low-carbon, eco-friendly concrete using industrial waste materials and to enhance the bioreceptivity of concrete surfaces to support marine life colonization.
