Green information systems (GIS) practices are essential for higher education institutions (HEIs) to achieve cost reduction, sustainability innovation, and competitive advantages while mitigating the negative environmental impacts associated with information technology activities, such as carbon emissions and energy consumption. Embracing green practices in HEIs also enhances institutional reputation, attracts more international students, and promotes sustainability. However, achieving sustainability through green practices in Malaysian HEIs remains challenging due to a combination of technological, organizational, and environmental (TOE) factors. Moreover, there is a lack of research evidence concerning the sustainable performance outcomes (environmental performance, social performance, and economic performance) of GIS practices in the Malaysian higher education industry, necessitating empirical evaluation. To address these issues, this study investigated the antecedents influencing GIS practices in Malaysian HEIs across TOE factors. It also examined the sustainable performance outcomes of GIS practices. Additionally, HEIs operate within an environment characterized by uncertainties and risks. Thus, the role of enterprise risk management (ERM) as a moderator between GIS practices and sustainable performance outcomes was examined. The study utilized an online survey questionnaire to gather data from 166 HEIs in Malaysia.
