Abstract
Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) employ electromagnets to support machine components. Magnetic bearing systems became very popular in the research community for the past few years. It inherent nonlinearity and open-loop instability present challenges for controller design. This thesis is concern about the advanced control of the active magnetic bearings. Simulations will be run using MATLAB to determine the best control system for AMBs. In this thesis, proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller and model predictive control (MPC) will be implemented. A model of the active magnetic bearing system has been developed and applied to Model Predictive Controller in MATLAB‟s MPC toolbox. On the same note, the model is also applied to PID Controller using SIMULINK in MATLAB. The output responses are put into a side by side comparison to determine which controller is more suitable for the AMB system. Based on simulation result, the MPC controller performs better performance as compared to PID controller when employed to the magnetic bearing system model.
