Abstract
Heat stroke is a heat related illness that is defined as a core body temperature that exceeds 40 °C followed by central nervous system dysfunction. There have been 34 cases of heat stroke reported in 2019 due to the hot and humid climate in Malaysia. Although several heat stroke detectors had previously been developed, there are still some limitations in monitoring multiple input parameters to determine the risk level accurately. Therefore, this project has developed an IoT-based wearable heat stroke detection system using fuzzy logic controller to solve the problem. The heart rate, blood oxygen saturation level, core body temperature, environmental temperature and relative humidity were measured using suitable sensors to evaluate the heat stroke risk level aided by a fuzzy logic controller. The information collected from the system were stored in Firebase real-time database. Furthermore, an Android application was created to display current and historical user information. Accuracy and performance tests were carried out after the wearable prototype was created. The results yielded the mean percentage error of only 0.32% for surrounding temperature measurement, 4.28% for relative humidity measurement, 3.83% for heart rate measurement, 0.37% for blood oxygen level measurement and 0.23% for core body temperature measurement. High heat stroke risk level was detected when heat index and heart rate intensity exceeded 39°C and 74% respectively although the core body temperature and blood oxygen level were normal, which were around 36°C and 96%. Then, the user was alerted early through LEDs and buzzer before any heat stroke occurrence. In conclusion, the wearable heat stroke detection system has managed to prevent the heat stroke when the user was exposed to hot and humid environment.
