This project is to build a system that is capable to do feature extraction of SignWriting. The system is built based on Altera’s FPGA DE2-70 board which contains a Nios II soft core processor. Image processing techniques and algorithm are implemented on the board. The algorithm is built to prepare a database for the matching process of the SignWriting translation system. The project is categorized into three important parts. The first part involves the generation of Nios II system using the SOPC Builder program. By using SOPC Builder, components on the DE2-70 board can be interconnected easily and orderly compared to traditional method where typical time consuming lengthy source code needs to be written for the same purpose. The next step involves the usage of Quartus II software to compile and download the design to the DE2-70 board. The final step involves the development of C programming language to code the feature extraction of SignWriting algorithm and behaviour of Nios II processor to manipulate the components on DE2-70 board to obtain the desired result. Being able to do the feature extraction of SignWriting can help to develop the SignWriting translation system with the combination of pre-processing and matching algorithm.
